Today, Terry Allen releases “Abandonitis” and “All That’s Left is Fare-Thee-Well,” the final two advance songs from Just Like Moby Dick, his first collection of new songs in over seven years, set for January 24 release on PoB. Featuring backing vocals by Moby Dick secret weapon Shannon McNally, “Abandonitis” is a dusty and doomed Tex-Mex shuffle, while “All That’s Left is Fare-Thee-Well,” by turns resigned and yearning, delivers one of the most penetrating moments on the album, with Allen, McNally, and co-producer Charlie Sexton trading vocals. Both songs are, appropriately, about leaving and being left behind.

Take a listen to both songs here.

Hailed as “riveting” (NPR), “stunning” (Pitchfork), and “delectably barbed” (New York Times), Terry Allen has influenced multiple generations of artists and iconoclasts through his music and visual art, and his new album Just Like Moby Dick can be described as the spiritual successor to his masterstroke 1979 double album Lubbock (on everything)

Recently, Allen presented a “too good to miss” (New York Times) exhibition of his drawings at Nina Johnson Gallery in Miami, and his 2019 collection of radio plays and “country-concrète” narrative audio works Pedal Steal + Four Corners is nominated for a 2020 GRAMMY for Best Album Notes (by Brendan Greaves of Paradise of Bachelors).

Terry Allen and the Panhandle Mystery Band will play a special show celebrating the coming release of Just Like Moby Dick at Austin’s Paramount Theater on January 18, 2020, with special guests planned to join for the evening. Additional dates follow, with more to be announced soon.
