Mike Polizze: Around Sound – Out Today.
Mike Polizze‘s second solo record is out today, streaming and available to grip in gorgeous physical forms. Uncut Magazine calls it “another beaut, Polizze using his wistful vocals, wry lyrics, and fingerpicking guitar style to foster moods that are joyful, forlorn, and somewhere in between. The easy, seemingly free-flowing vibe belies the intricacy of his craftsmanship throughout.” We wholeheartedly concur.
Around Sound, the second solo record by Polizze, of Philadelphia psych-squallers Purling Hiss and Birds of Maya, is a rainier and more pensive affair than its predecessor, LongLost Solace Find (2020), despite its playful humor and plentiful hooks. It affirms his status as a consummate (and now not-so-secret) craftsman of instantly memorable bucolic odes of languid beauty, deepening his fingerstyle acoustic guitar magic. Polizze plays every part and instrument on the album, and once again, he co-produced with engineer Jeff Zeigler, who has also worked with War on Drugs, Kurt Vile, Mary Lattimore, among many others.
Today Mike is sharing a new video for “Is There Anybody Out There?,” shot on film in NYC.
Mike will be playing a string of solo shows this spring, including dates with Jake Xerxes Fussell, Roger Miller (Mission of Burma), Prison (featuring Paul Major), and Bill Nace. See below for dates.

The fleet-fingered “Is There Anybody Out There?” showcases Polizze’s new emphasis on acoustic fingerpicking, with traces of friends, collaborators, and fellow Delaware County, PA denizens Kurt Vile and Steve Gunn, though only in the sense of shared artistic ancestry—Delco echoes of British fingerstyle forebears like Bert Jansch and Wizz Jones.Directed and edited by Polizze himself, the ghostly, impressionistic video was shot on film in New York City by Jon Khanlian. As Polizze wanders the streets, subways, and waterfronts with his guitar, he appears as a spectral presence, both among and apart from his surroundings and the madding crowds that envelop him.

As Mike explains:
“I reunited with old friend and collaborator Jon Khanlian, who has made many music videos with me, on a quick trip to NYC.
“Starting in Jersey City, then onto Manhattan, I donned my Holt (a guitar of mysterious Texan origin), with him following me (with a big old Panasonic and Nikkor lenses, which seemed to turn some film heads) for a few hours. On a whim, with no tripod or plan, we bounced from the subway to street, busking and strumming among folks going about daily business. Filming on an overcast day in April, he caught the footage, and I (later) edited it into a music video.
“The song itself is a reflection about being young, and who you become. ‘Is there anybody out there that can drag me away?’ … ‘just a wide eyed stray’ … ‘you don’t want to go down that road …’
“Conceptually, we thought going into a city full of people (while asking if anybody’s there) would present interesting imagery.”
