One of 2013’s best rock albums. Over the course of Solar Motel ‘s 41 minutes you’ll find moments of stunning calm and conflagrations of chaos that ebb and flow like tides of sound. Forsyth’s ear for melody creates a vibe that is hypnotizing and engaging — familiar rather than foreign, comforting rather than disconcerting. In terms of guitar work, it lands somewhere between the Middle Eastern riffing of Dick Dale and the freeness of Sonny Sharrock — in short, Solar Motel hotwires so many guitar traditions that it blazes a new path. If you’re the sort of person who loves the buzz of a glowing vacuum tube, believes magic is released from a hand-wired circuit and thinks the voice of six-strings can be just as lyrical and beautiful as a human voice, this is your kind of band.
– Sean Maloney, The Nashville Scene
If you take “classic” to mean “archetypal,” I don’t mind saying that Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band are currently the acme of classic rock. You don’t have to listen to the Philadelphia-based guitarist’s solo records for long to figure out that he’s absorbed Jimmy Page’s arrangement acumen, Neil Young’s extravagant passion, and Keith Richards’s rhythmic savagery—but he’s also internalized the distinctive improvisational methodologies of the Grateful Dead, the Dream Syndicate, and especially Television.
A four-part, psych-rock symphony that could double as an alternate soundtrack to that time Homer Simpson ate a Guatemalan Insanity Pepper and spent an evening hallucinating about pyramids and talking coyotes.
– Andy Downing, Columbus Alive
