Redbuds are blooming, pawpaws are sprouting, and sweet tea is pouring–Spring has come to North Carolina. It’s the perfect season to announce a very limited-edition, deluxe repressing of Hiss Golden Messenger‘s Poor Moon LP (2011, PoB-02). Long out of print on vinyl, Poor Moon (named in homage to the Canned Heat track penned by the immortal Blind Owl) offers a moving continuation of the spiritually-charged song cycle commenced on the critically acclaimed Bad Debt album (2010) and completed with the masterpiece Haw (2013), proposing an America at perpetual sundown, wracked by devotion, wrecked by celebration.
In the tradition of the first two pressings of this special collection of songs, this deluxe edition is strictly limited to 500 copies. Like the original pressing, it features a beautiful tip-on jacket with illustrations by Alex Jako, and like both prior editions, it includes an edition number to differentiate it from the other pressings, a digital download coupon, and a new LP label color (moon-yellow in this case.) Orders will ship as soon as we receive the shipment from the pressing plant, which we anticipate will be in mid-May. This record is a sentimental favorite for many folks, including us–it was our second release as a label and our first with HGM–and this third edition will move quickly, so we recommend ordering now.

“A fantastic, on-repeat record that recalls the aesthetic risks and rewards of the best stuff produced by Laurel Canyon’s singer-songwriters. HGM pairs an instant accessibility with careful complexity [on these] 13 tracks of skewed, country-soul greatness.” – Pitchfork
“North Carolina songwriter M.C. Taylor sings unflinching country tunes that evoke the still-water depths of Merle Haggard.” – The Washington Post
“Melodies and stories straight out of the same Appalachian hills that gave birth to Gaither Carlton and Clarence Ashley. Find me something more American than that.” – Aquarium Drunkard
“IT’S A SHIT BUSINESS.”
