Jennifer Castle: Angels of Death (PoB-041)

A sublime meditation on mortality and memory, ghosts and grief, Angels of Death casts a series of spells against forgetting and finality, in the form of mystic-minimalist country-soul torch songs about writing, time travel, and spectral visitations. Castle wrote and recorded this breathtaking follow-up to the acclaimed Pink City (2014) in a 19th century church near the shores of Lake Erie, where her family also lived and experienced a constellation of losses.

The Weather Station Nominated for a Juno Award.

The Weather Station’s critically acclaimed self-titled album, released in October, has been nominated for a Juno Award in the category of Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. Congrats to Tamara and the band!

Nap Eyes Share “Dull Me Line” via Noisey.

Nap Eyes will release their third album, I’m Bad Now, on March 9th. After premiering the first single “Every Time the Feeling” with NPR Music, today the band shares the propulsive second single “Dull Me Line,” which Noisey describes as “marked by shimmering guitar chords and arguably the most instantly palatable chorus the band’s ever come up with.” Read Nigel’s reflections on songwriting in the accompanying interview.

Commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago for its world premiere performance, Bellowing Sun is a twelve-faceted sonic inquiry into celestial cycles and the illuminating nature of darkness, the majestic culmination of composer, harmoniumist, and synthesist Jaime Fennelly’s immersive explorations of the natural world’s sensory dimensions and the dialogues between musical traditions. Mind Over Mirrors: Bellowing Sun (PoB-040)

A twelve-faceted sonic inquiry into celestial cycles and the illuminating nature of darkness, Bellowing Sun is the majestic culmination of Jaime Fennelly’s immersive explorations of the natural world’s sensory dimensions. Commissioned by the MCA Chicago for its world premiere performance, and recorded with John McEntire (Tortoise), it features Janet Beveridge Bean (Freakwater), Jim Becker (Iron and Wine), and Jon Mueller (Death Blues).

Red River Dialect Shares “Gull Rock” via Uproxx.

Red River Dialect will release their third album, Broken Stay Open Sky, on February 2nd. After presenting the “rhapsodic” (NPR Music) lead single “Kukkuripa,” the band now shares “Gull Rock,” described by Uproxx as “frenzied and fantastic.” The band will tour the UK to celebrate the release of the album, including several dates with The Weather Station.
